Why modern cloud environments have moved from static credentials to temporary identities — and what happens behind the scenes when you log in through SSO.
In high-security corporate environments, the days of storing AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY in a local .env file are over. If you’re accessing AWS from behind a corporate firewall using Single Sign-On, you’re likely using a far more secure mechanism: identity federation. Moving from static “passwords” to temporary “identities” is a fundamental shift in cloud security thinking. Here’s how it works under the hood.

The problem with static credentials
A static access key and secret are just that — static. Once issued, they’re valid until manually revoked. If they’re accidentally pushed to GitHub or leaked in a log, the blast radius is indefinite. IAM roles work differently. They issue temporary security credentials: an access key, a secret key, and a session token that self-destruct within 1 to 12 hours.

When you log into the AWS Console through your company’s portal, a sophisticated chain of trust fires between your Identity Provider (IdP) — like Okta, Azure AD, or Ping — and AWS.
Authentication
You log into your internal company portal. Your IdP verifies your identity against your corporate directory.
The assertion
Your IdP generates a digitally signed “passport” — a SAML or OIDC assertion — and sends it to AWS.
The exchange
AWS hands the assertion to the Security Token Service (STS) for validation.
AssumeRole
STS verifies the cryptographic signature and generates scoped temporary credentials for the specific IAM role you’re mapped to.

Behind a corporate firewall, your connection to AWS isn’t a direct line — but the architecture handles this seamlessly across two surfaces.
Web Console
Your browser manages all redirects. Once your IdP confirms your identity, it returns you to AWS with a sign-in token already embedded. You never directly handle a password during this flow.
Developer CLI
Running aws sso login triggers a browser-based auth flow. On completion, temporary tokens are cached in ~/.aws/sso/cache — no static keys required.
